The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 except those that pray 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
