The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 stay away from sins 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And sons present by his side. 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he looked around, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
