The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 Purify your inner self, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 May he be condemned! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 He looked (at others); 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 it scorches the skin; 29 over it are nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
