The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 arise, and warn! 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And stay away from idols. 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 Then looked he, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
