He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 you attended to him, 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Be cursed (the disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what has God created him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 Then We cause to grow therein the grain, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And Olives and Dates, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruit and grass - 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 and covered by darkness. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
