Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the Dawn, 1 And ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
