Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
