Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 The multiple and the one, 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.' 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
