Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 an orphaned relative 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
True are the words of God the Almighty.
