The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
