The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the sun and its morning brightness, 1 By the Moon as she follows him; 2 And by oath of the day when it reveals it 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 The heavens and its architecture, 5 by the earth and Who spread it, 6 And by oath of the soul and by oath of Him Who made it proper. 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 But the Messenger of Allah said to them: "It is a She-camel of Allah! And (bar her not from) having her drink!" 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. 15
