The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the Night as it conceals (the light); 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And accepts the best, 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
