The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
