The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the night when it covers 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
