The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night, when it envelops, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
