The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who taught by the pen - 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 truly, all will return to your Lord. 8 What is your opinion – regarding him who forbids – 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 Have you seen if he is upon guidance 11 He would enjoin piety, so how good it would be! 12 What thinkest thou? If he cries lies, and turns away - 13 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? 14 Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock - 15 A lying, sinful forehead. 16 So let him call his associates, 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 (Muhammad), never yield to him! Prostrate yourself and try to come closer to God. ۩ 19
