A throng of the ancients 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the Left Hand Who will be those on the Left Hand? 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
