۞ To Abraham We gave the right guidance and We knew him very well. 51 Abraham asked his father and his people, "What are these statues which you worship?" 52 They said: We found our fathers worshippers of them. 53 He said, “Indeed you all – you and your forefathers – were in open error.” 54 They said: "Have you brought us the truth, or are you one of those who play about?" 55 He said: Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them; and I am of those who testify unto that. 56 And [he added to himself.] "By God, I shall most certainly bring about the downfall of your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone away!" 57 And then he broke those [idols] to pieces, [all] save the biggest of them, so that they might [be able to] turn to it. 58 They said, "Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is of the wrongdoers." 59 Some of them said: "We heard a youth called Abraham speak (ill) of them." 60 They said, "Then bring him here in the sight of all the people, so that they may act as witnesses." 61 'Abraham' they said, 'was it you who did this to our gods' 62 "No," he said. "It was done by that chief of theirs. Ask him in case they can speak." 63 So they turned towards their own selves and (inwardly) said, “Indeed you yourselves are unjust.” 64 Then crestfallen (they confessed): "Truly, as you know, they cannot speak." 65 (So Abraham) said: "Then why do you worship something apart from God that cannot profit you or do you harm? 66 “Disgrace be upon you and all the idols whom you worship instead of Allah; so do you not have sense?” 67 They said, "Burn him and support your gods - if you are to act." 68 [But] We said: O fire! Be thou cool, and [a source of] inner peace for Abraham!" 69 They desired to outwit him; so We made them the worse losers, 70 And We delivered him as well as Lut (removing them) to the land which We had blessed for all people. 71 And We bestowed upon him ls-haq and Ya qub as a grandson; and each one We made righteous. 72 We made them leaders who guided people by Our command. We revealed to them the doing of good, observance of prayer and the giving of alms and Us alone did they worship. 73 And unto Lot we gave judgment and knowledge, and We delivered him from the community that did abominations. Lo! they were folk of evil, lewd. 74 And We took him into Our mercy; surely he was of the good. 75
