The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
