He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 To him you give attention. 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 [It is recorded] in honored sheets, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and grass, 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 wife and sons, 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
