Nay, verily: By the Moon, 32 And the night when it departs, 33 and the morn when it dawns! 34 Surely it (hell) is one of the gravest (misfortunes), 35 A warning to mortals, 36 To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;- 37 Each soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 Except the Companions of the Right Hand. 39 [dwelling] In gardens [of paradise,] they will inquire 40 about the guilty ones: 41 "what led you into hell?" 42 They will say, "We were not of those who prayed, 43 And did not feed the needy, 44 And plunged into useless things with those who were obstinate, 45 And we have been belying the Day of Requital. 46 until the Inevitable End [death] overtook us." 47 The intercession of the intercessors shall then be of no avail to them. 48 What is then the matter with them, that they turn away from the admonition 49 like frightened donkeys 50 Fleeing away from a lion. 51 Indeed, each one of them desires to be given unrolled scrolls. 52 By no means. In fact they do not fear the Hereafter. 53 There is no doubt that the Quran is a guide. 54 Let him then who heeds remember it. 55 But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills: [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness. 56
