He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 when the blind came to him. 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 To him you give attention. 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and fearfully, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 So whoso wills may give heed to it. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Noble and pious. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And Grapes and nutritious plants, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 his mother, his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 but others will be gloomy 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
