The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 arise and warn, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 purify your garments; 4 And all defilement shun! 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 He looked (at others); 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will cast him into the fire of Hell. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
