He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 and fearfully, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Woe to man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what has God created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 and overcast with gloom: 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
