A multitude from the ancients. 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers - 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Therefore, O dear Prophet Mohammed - peace and blessings be upon him, proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
