a large group of the earlier people 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 "We have fallen into debt; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
