Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the luminious Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
