a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
