He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 For him who does not care, 5 you attend to him, 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 From him you are distracted. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what did He create him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
