The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
