He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 to him thou attendest 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 and in awe of God 9 you pay him no heed. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 We send down abundant water, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 And dense gardens, 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
