The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 So that is a tough day. 9 For the disbelievers - not easy. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
