The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 tearing away his skin! 16 Calling: "[O Kafir (O disbeliever in Allah, His angels, His Book, His Messengers, Day of Resurrection and in Al-Qadar (Divine Preordainments), O Mushrik (O polytheist, disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah)] (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind (on the Day of Resurrection) just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up] [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 18, Page 289] 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Are free of blame, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
