The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 stay away from sins 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
