The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 They do not expect any reward 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
