He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and fears (Allah), 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And Grapes and nutritious plants, 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 and fruits and fodder 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 and covered by darkness. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
