A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
