The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the night when it covers 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 No one will burn in it but the most wretched, 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 They do not expect any reward 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
