The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 By no means: Verily man exorbitateth. 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 Indeed towards your Lord only is the return. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinning forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
