The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
