The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Star when it setteth, 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 Indeed he saw some of the greatest signs of His Lord. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 Why - for yourselves [you would choose only] male offspring, whereas to Him [you assign] female: 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
