The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
