The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Night as it conceals (the light); 1 And [by] the day when it appears 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
