The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
