THUS, INDEED, have We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones; and he said: "Behold, I am an apostle of the Sustainer of all the worlds!" 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance." 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, lo! they broke the pledge. 50 And said Firaun, “O my people! Is not the kingdom of Egypt for me, and these rivers that flow beneath me? So do you not see?” 51 “Or that I am better than him, for he is lowly – and he does not seem to talk plainly.” 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 So he incited his people to levity and they obeyed him: surely they were a transgressing people. 54 We took revenge on them by drowning them all together. 55 and made them a thing of the past and an example for those who would come after them. 56
