A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 "We are ruined, 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
