The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
