The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
