Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
