I say the truth, and call the moon to witness, 32 And the night when it withdraweth 33 and by the day when it dawns (with its radiance), 34 it is one of the greatest trials, 35 it is a warning to man, 36 Unto him of you who will advance or hang back. 37 Every soul is mortgaged for its own deeds. 38 save the Companions of the Right; 39 [dwelling] In gardens [of paradise,] they will inquire 40 concerning the sinners, 41 "What has brought you into hell-fire?" 42 They shall say: We were not of those who prayed; 43 And did not feed the needy, 44 And we have been wading with the waders. 45 and belied the Day of Recompense 46 until certainty came upon us [in death]." 47 So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors. 48 What is the matter with them that they turn away from this Reminder, 49 as if they were startled asses 50 Fleeing from a lion? 51 No indeed; each one of them desires that open letters be sent to each of them. 52 Nay! But they fear not the Hereafter (from Allah's punishment). 53 Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment. 54 Then whoever wills will remember it. 55 And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy. 56
